NOJOS has set a goal to create/come up with reccomendations for a comprehensive system to address sexual abuse. From prevention to treatment to sanctions to aftercare. This request is a rare opportunity to pool our resources and knowledge and create a system that addresses sexual abuse. So i ask you, the experts: What are the glaring gaps in our system? Where do we need to invest energy and resources? What have we too long overlooked? How can we get diverse components of our sytems to work collaboratively to improve outcomes?
Please share your thoughts and contribute to the creation of a system that will hopefully put some of us offender service providers out of a job? (or more likley, re-align our energies doing more prevention!).

I talked to a guy outside our field who felt that parent/youth education regarding the law and consequences of sexual acting out would go a long way to avoiding a lot of pain for a lot of youth for a long time. We have a little pamphlet on the law I can bring to NOJOS if folks are interested.
I also think that therapists following a youth for some in-home work just prior to discharge from treatment and just after discharge would be helpful.
I think education is a great idea and public trust in the presenter will be crucial.
It seems many parents are fearful or at least hesitent to have sexual information presented. In presenting the law and consequences, it may be a good idea to include healthy or normal aspects of sexuality (for parents) so they don't freak out when they discover their kids in "normal" steps of discovery.
Perhaps the real complication, however, is the balance between respecting parental values and still giving the appropriate information.
Chris, I think that is a great idea. Like to review your pamphlet.
